Friday, I drove to Boise with ten members of the cycling team for the Boise State Collegiate Omnium. It would have been my first stage race.
The team here sure has the whole traveling process down; The sports club's cargo van had a rack that held all eleven bikes securely and cleanly inside. This became particularly valuable when we were driving through 4 hours of blizzard on Friday night...
We arrived in Boise at 11:45 after the time zone adjustment. The host house was gorgeous, and they'd left gels, a variety of bars, bagels and fruit out on the counters for us for breakfast.
In the morning we woke up to snow falling and an inch and a half on the ground. We got dressed, ate breakfast, filled water bottles and loaded the vans before hearing the races were cancelled for Saturday. After a painful period of debate; some - including me - wanted to stay for the potential crit race the second day, but many hadn't brought enough studying materials for a free day and understandably wanted to salvage the second day of the weekend for studying before finals. If it had been any other weekend everyone would have stayed.
Will worked it out so that a few people could keep the cargo van and stay, while the rest drove home. I didn't want to deal with potential complications traveling back to Eugene with other Oregon teams and decided to head back aswell.
We stopped for some good coffee in Baker City and had a great pasta dinner at the Hobson's in Milwaukie.
We were in Boise for 9 hours and drove 19.
Next Saturday we race in Eugene, Sunday in Corvallis. I'd hoped to get some racing in out there before getting my ass kicked on our home course...so much for that!
